Set a Static IP Address

Set up your PC so it can talk to a central controller at its default IP address, 192.168.1.1.

What you'll need

Step 1: Open View Network Connections

Press the Windows key on your keyboard and type view net into the search bar. Click View network connections under Best match.

Step 2: Open the Ethernet adapter

In the Network Connections window, double-click the Ethernet adapter the cable is plugged into. Its status usually says Unidentified network once it's connected to the controller.

Can't tell which one it is: Unplug the cable and watch which adapter changes to Network cable unplugged, then plug it back in.

Step 3: Select Properties

In the Ethernet Status window, click Properties.

Step 4: Open the TCP/IPv4 settings

Click once on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to highlight it, then click Properties.

Heads up: Click the words to highlight the line. Don't click the checkbox, which turns IPv4 off for that adapter.

Step 5: Set the static IP address

Select Use the following IP address and enter:

IP address192.168.1.100
Subnet mask255.255.255.0
Default gatewayLeave blank

Press OK, then Close on the Ethernet Properties window.

Step 6: Test the connection with ping

Press the Windows key, type cmd, and open Command Prompt.

Type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter.

✓ Connected

Every line says Reply from 192.168.1.1 and Lost = 0. Your PC can talk to the controller.

✗ Not connected

Any Request timed out or Destination host unreachable line means the PC can't reach the controller. That's true even if the summary counts some packets as "received".

Ping failed? Check:
  • The cable is plugged into LAN1 on the controller, and the controller is powered on.
  • You edited the Ethernet adapter the cable is actually plugged into (step 2).
  • The IP address and subnet mask match step 5 exactly.
  • The controller is still at its default address. If it has been set up before, it may have a different IP (see below).
If the controller has a different IP address

When the controller isn't at 192.168.1.1, set your PC's static IP to match it:

IP addressSubnet mask
Controller10.0.5.20255.255.255.0
Your PC10.0.5.100255.255.255.0

Then ping the controller's actual address in step 6 (for this example, ping 10.0.5.20).
